Anthropic and Meta are shaping AI space

Anthropic just opened its books. Meta just went to the equity market. Together they tell you where the AI trade is headed.
Anthropic's S-1 landed Monday. The headline numbers:
š Revenue grew about 1,300% to $16.3B in the first half of 2026, including $11.56B in Q2 alone.
š The net loss was $80.7B, but most of it came from fair-value changes on convertible bonds, which is largely non-cash.
āļø Q2 revenue was $2.08 for every $1 spent on compute. Operating income swung from a $1.67B loss in Q1 to a $974M profit in Q2.
The bear case is also in the filing. The compute commitments total is still blank, and outside estimates of the bill run from $518B to $800B.
At the same time, Meta launched about $35B of common and mandatory convertible preferred stock, plus a $60B at-the-market program planned for 2027. Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom signaled interest in buying up to $5B of the shares.
Look at who those three are:
š¹ Nvidia:Ā a multiyear deal for "millions" of Blackwell and Rubin GPUs
š¹ AMD:Ā up to 6GW of custom Instinct GPUs, plus a warrant giving Meta up to 160M AMD shares as shipments hit milestones
š¹ Broadcom:Ā custom MTIA accelerators through 2029. Its CEO left Meta's board in April to advise on custom silicon.
So the supplier buys Meta stock, Meta spends the proceeds on that supplier's chips, and in AMD's case equity flows back the other way.
The bottom line:
1. The circularity is real, but the dollars are small.Ā Up to $5B in non-binding interest is a rounding error next to roughly $825B in future commitments. The bigger effect is alignment: your biggest vendors become your shareholders.
2. It echoes earlier AI financing loops,Ā and it's where skeptics will focus. Revenue backed by the customer's own capital is harder to read.
3. Credit is already pricing the risk.Ā AI-related issuer spreads sit near 115bp versus about 78bp for broader investment grade. Meta's 5-year CDS hit 108bp.
4. Equities are splitting.Ā Meta fell about 1.6% on the news. Chip stocks rose on Anthropic's filing.
The test is whether end-customer revenue, like Anthropic's, grows fast enough to justify the build. If it does, the loop is a funding bridge. If not, it's leverage with extra steps.
