Corewave blues

CoreWeave isn't a household name, but a lot of the AI economy runs through it. Right now, its credit market is flashing red.
Quick background: CoreWeave is one of the leading "neoclouds": a specialized cloud provider built around Nvidia GPUs. AI labs and big tech companies that can't build compute fast enough rent capacity from it to train and run their models. It borrows heavily to buy chips and data center capacity, then leases that capacity out under long-term contracts. In effect, it's a leveraged bet that AI demand keeps growing.
So what the debt market is saying matters. Take a look at the charts below:
📈 CoreWeave's 5-year CDS just crossed ~1,000 bps, a record for the period shown. A year ago it was ~380 bps.
📉 Its 2032 bonds fell below 80 cents on the dollar on Wednesday. They were trading near par in June.
That is a distressed signal, not a dip.
Why it matters beyond one company:
1. The AI buildout runs on debt. When lenders reprice the risk of the purest public neocloud, the whole financing model gets tested. If the debt market dries out, demand for chips will slow, and the AI house of cards will weaken.
2. Cost of capital is the new bottleneck. If credit markets demand 10%+ from one of the sector's biggest players, smaller AI infrastructure names face worse terms, or no access at all.
3. Counterparties are exposed. Chipmakers, data center developers, and AI labs that depend on this capacity all have a stake in whether CoreWeave can keep funding its growth.
4. Equity and credit are diverging. Equity investors price a growth story. Credit investors price the ability to pay it back. Right now, credit is the more sober voice.
This doesn't necessarily mean that AI demand is going away. But its funding is its Achilles heel, and it can cause a lot of stress.
