There’s less than six months to Election Day, and President Biden needs to do some catch up, since the polls indicate Trump is up in swing states and his popularity is low. In the past, whenever a president was going through a through in popularity, a military action was enough to show strength and control. This time around, the White House has decided to focus on protecting domestic manufacturing, which is heavy in swing states, and has imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, particularly on Electric Vehicles, as you can see below. These tariffs check several boxes: (1) show strength against China, where the relationship tone is being elevated. (2) it gives POTUS a framework to speak at rallies in those states he desperately need to regain from Trump and (3) it might reduce the trade deficit and support on shoring, which is big these days. Chips and EVs are the new oil.
